 BRAND YOURSELF
GATHER & ANALYZE 5-10 JOB ADS

COLLEGE STUDENTS &  CAREER MOVES

To effectively brand yourself and create a powerful summary of qualifications section - you must identify and sell experience employers want.  Do this by collecting 5-10 job ads for the jobs you want and underline all skills in them that you possess.  Let's look at a sample Executive Assistant job ad with Rachel's skills already underlined.

EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT ... 10 years experience supporting C Level Executives (CEO, CTO, COO), managing executive itineraries and schedules, making global travel arrangements, writing and editing senior level correspondence, coordinating executive conference calls and events, serving as executive's representative in his/her absence, executive office management, and current office systems experience including MS Office Suite, Excel, PowerPoint.  Must have experience creating high level executive presentations.

Compare the ad requirements to the sample resume branding sections below.  Which one will land Rachel interviews as Executive Assistant at $65,000?  Which one keeps her at her level as an Administrative Assistant at $40,000?

 USE SKILL HEADINGS
IN THE BODY OF YOUR RESUME TO MATCH JOB ADS

EET - ELECTRONIC  ENGINEERING

Now to the body of your resume - if your job titles are weak but you have performed the job functions your ads request - then re-label your titles with equivalent job titles or skill headings that are truthful.  For example, Rachel's actual title had been  In her resume sample below for Administrative Assistant we labeled her experience EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT because that's true as she assisted the CEO.  In the sample resume description: Performed all duties working under the title of Administrative Assistant - this way when her references are checked she has included her real title but up-sold herself for a higher position.

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT
.... or ...

EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT TO CEO
XYZ Company  2/2000-Present

MANAGED EXECUTIVE OFFICE FOR CEO OF $200 MILLION COMPANY -
Managed all executive office functions and administration for CEO including supporting 12 Division Heads that included:  Handling special projects, tracking CEO expense budget, preparing division performance reports, coordinating with Division Heads to relay and resolve departmental issues and problems.  Performed all duties working under the title of Administrative Assistant.
Coordinated Executive Itineraries, Schedules & Travel - Coordinated high level itineraries, national and global travel for CEO and Division Heads which spanned 12 countries, and controlled $200,000 travel budget.  Managed all other executive schedules and appointments.

When creating your resume, don't feel you have to sit down and crank out your resume in 1-2 hours.  Analyze your ads and create different versions of each section of your resume to see what is strongest.  Don't get caught up making it perfect in one sitting. Also, don't just copy sample resumes and resume examples - your resume needs to be you!

LET'S GRAPH RACHEL'S IMAGE

The 1st chapter of my book Proven Resumes Strategies That Have  Increased Salaries, is titled Image Control.  It shows how to graph everything in your resume to determine if it makes your image go up, down or matches the job, job ad and salary you want.  Looking at the sample resume graphs below, let's see ho Rachel's image looks for the $65,000 Executive Assistant job with her old resume.  Graphing resumes clearly explains why most resumes FAIL.

When you consider Rachel's $65,000 job goal, does her image go up, down or match her goal when you read ... Administrative Assistant? Managing Office & Administrative functions? Coordinating Staff Schedules?  Writing and Editing Correspondence.  Using MS Word, PowerPoint and Bookkeeping Systems.

Because none of these statements targets language related to Executives, Rachel's image drops and continues to drop to a level below that of her $65,000 job goal.  Her old resume still matches her current salary of $40,000.

Now consider Rachel's new branding / summary of qualifications section.  Does her image go up, down or match the $65,000 goal and job ad requirements?  Rachel's new image matches and stays on par with her goal of the $65,000 Executive Assistant.

YOU CAN SEE THE FINANCIAL VALUE OF RACHEL'S RESUME

As Rachel's graph shows, you can actually see the financial value of her new resume - $25,000!  Another way to look at it is - what is the cost of a weak, untargeted resume to Rachel?  $25,000!
 CHANGE YOUR STRATEGY
IF YOUR RESUME'S NOT LANDING THE JOBS YOU WANT

I can’t say this enough.  If you submit a large number of resumes don't the salary and number of interviews you want – THEN CHANGE YOUR STRATEGY!  This means you have not properly targeted and branded your resume.  Go back through your job ads and then graph the image your resume creates.  If your job ads request different skills and experience  - then create a resume targeted to each ad.
I CUSTOMIZED MY RESUME & GENERATED 100% RESPONSE RATE

I created customized resumes for myself to test my own resume success rate a few years ago. I applied to 8 jobs from Career Center Director to Career Counselor to Career Development Instructor to Technical Recruiter.  I received requests for interviews from all positions over a 3-week period.  A 100% response rate - that's the power of targeted, branded resumes.  In today's economic decline, achieving 100% response rates may not be feasible - but if you've only been landing 1-2 interviews for every 50-100 resumes submitted and you double or triple your interview requests - those extra interviews can result in the job offer you really want and need.
 CREATE GREAT RESUME DESIGN

When you look at your resume ... keeping your job ad requirements in mind ... ask yourself, ‘Where does my attention first, second, and then third? Is this what you need to sell to employers is seconds?  Use bolded subheads that match your experience to what employers need rather than using long lists of bulleted resume statements. Indent subheads and subhead paragraphs as illustrated in Rachel's example.  Use graphic lines to make your branding / summary of qualifications section stand out.  Make your name smaller (in bold) than your main headings.  Replace typical headings such as Objective Statement with a personal branding  section like the ones above. Put your references on a separate page and address salary information only when you have to in cover letters. Use one font that’s larger in size for main headings and a smaller font size for subheadings, and a completely different font for the body of your text -- just like newspapers use.  Proof, proof and proof.
DOES YOUR RESUME HAVE THESE PROBLEMS???

-Your resume doesn't  ....
-create an image that matches the salary/job level you want
-provide a short, comprehensive summary of your top 4-5 skill areas
-use $, # and % extensively to drive home your key achievements
-market your bottom line achievements, making you highly attractive to potential employers
-effectively market your transferable skills
-use layout that directs the reader's eye to your top skills in seconds
-replace your weak, unrelated job titles with skill headings that match the jobs you want
-use subheads that grab attention and drive the reader through your resume
-omit work history dates that make you appear too old
-convince employers that you are well qualified and a top candidate
-capitalize on most your relevant experience, even if it's short
-prioritize your most important skills for maximum impact
-create an image of your skills strong enough to drive the interview forward
-market you strongly enough to offset an employer's risk in hiring you
-effectively market your lower level jobs if you are a recent graduate
-de-emphasize your short or erratic work history

PROBLEMS YOU MAY ALSO BE FACING

You may also be experiencing one or several of the following problems:

-You've sent out hundreds of resumes but only landed 1-2 interviews
-You are landing interviews but getting terrible salary offers
-You get 2nd & 3rd interviews but don't get hired
-You are trying to make a career change but can't get interviews
-You need a higher salary but you don't look qualified
-You want management, have the skills but not the titles
-You are a recent graduate, but can't get interviews for better jobs
-You have skills for a better job but can't land interviews
-You are in a highly competitive field and need a very strong resume
-You are re-entering the workforce after an absence and can't get any interviews
-Interviewers tell you, 'You are overqualified.'
-Interviewers tell you, 'You are underqualified.'
-You are an executive with a limited pool of jobs you can apply for, therefore your resume must maximize each contact and generate interviews at every possible turn
